While an inspiring story for moviegoers, “The Mustang” cannot fully explain the challenges that America’s wild horses face. For decades, costly and tragic government roundups have removed tens of thousands of wild horses and burros from America’s rugged and remote rangelands. RTF’s fundamental mission will always be to protect the freedom and diversity of America’s wild horses on their rightful ranges. Unfortunately, these heartbreaking roundups continue, at least for now, creating the need for high-quality sanctuary programs like RTF’s California sanctuaries and training programs including the inmate programs like the one portrayed in “The Mustang,” when guided by humane and experienced leaders.
